Handling
1. Avoid breathing dust, mist, or vapors.
2 .Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing.
3. Use in a well-ventilated area.
4. Wear appropriate PPE: chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing.
5. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
6. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling.
7. Avoid release into the environment.
8. Handle carefully to prevent dust formation (for solid forms).
Storage
1. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
2. Keep container tightly closed when not in use.
3. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
4. Store away from strong oxidizing agents and incompatible materials.
5.Keep in original container or approved packaging.
6. Store according to local regulations for agricultural/chemical products.
1. Agriculture – Nitrification Inhibitor
NBPT is widely used as a nitrification inhibitor in crop production:
Purpose:
Slows the conversion of ammonium (NH₄⁺) into nitrate (NO₃⁻) in soil by inhibiting the nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas spp.).
Reduces nitrogen losses from leaching and denitrification, improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE).
Benefits for Crops:
Increases fertilizer efficiency for corn, wheat, rice, vegetables, and other nitrogen-demanding crops.
Supports higher yields with the same nitrogen input.
Helps maintain soil fertility over the season.
Environmental Advantages:
Reduces nitrate leaching into groundwater.
Decreases nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions, a potent greenhouse gas.
2. Fertilizer Formulations
NBPT is typically coated or blended with urea fertilizers:
Urea + NBPT:
Common commercial products: coated urea granules, slow-release urea, or liquid urea solutions with NBPT.
Enhances the longevity of ammonium in the soil, delaying its conversion to nitrate.
Application Methods:
Broadcast with urea fertilizer.
Incorporated into soil before crop planting.
Can be used in precision agriculture systems (e.g., banding, fertigation).
3. Environmental & Regulatory Uses
NBPT is part of sustainable nitrogen management strategies.
Supports climate-smart agriculture by reducing nitrogen losses and greenhouse gas emissions.
Often recommended in regions with high rainfall or leaching-prone soils.
